I was the graphic designer for the three-time-award-winning short film Shadow of the Killer: The Kenny Lovelace Story shot by Middle Tennessee News. My logo work is featured in the beginning and end of the film, as well as on the Middle Tennessee News website. I based the design on the album art of Jerry Lee Lewis, the man Kenny Lovelace played violin for.
The film was awarded the 2024 Excellence in Broadcasting Award in the Best Local Use of Digital or Social Media Platforms category by the Tennessee Association of Broadcasters. It also won Silver in 2024 at The Telly Awards and Best Video Entertainment Program at the 2024 College Media Association Pinnacle Awards.
The director wanted the album artwork of Jerry Lee Lewis to inspire the film's logo. He specifically liked the above artwork of the late 60s and early 70s, requesting a similar style in the logo I designed. The yellow "Killer" font was iconic and would be recognizable for fans of Jerry Lee Lewis, so I wanted to incorporate that into the logo. I recreated the type in Adobe Illustrator and customized a similar font for the rest of the logo type.
I loved the funky type, geometric shapes and muted colors used on the middle album artwork. The director wanted to create an animation for the opening scene, so designing something that could have some movement was crucial. I created a color schemeĀ for the project based on this collection of album artwork.
